Loss or Grief
Understanding & Managing It
ABOUT THIS COURSE
Loss and grief are powerful emotional experiences that affect everyone at some point in life. In this course, Professor Steve Peters explains how the mind responds to loss and why grief can feel overwhelming.
Using The Chimp Model, Steve explores how the emotional system reacts when something important to us is lost. Understanding this helps explain why grief produces such strong feelings and why it takes time for the mind to adjust.
The focus of this course is on recognising what is happening in your mind and learning practical ways to manage grief while allowing the natural process of adjustment to take place.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course explains how the mind responds to loss and why grief can feel so powerful. The focus is on understanding the emotional reaction from the Chimp, recognising what the Human can do to help, and learning practical ways to manage the experience of grief.
The Chimp experiences loss as a major emotional shock. This can lead to intense feelings such as sadness, anger, confusion, or disbelief as the mind tries to process what has happened.
The Chimp reacts emotionally and immediately, while the Human gradually works to understand the reality of the loss. Recognising these different responses helps explain why grief can feel conflicted and difficult.
Steve explains that grief is not something that can be removed quickly. The emotional system needs time to adjust to the loss and accept the new reality.
The course explores ways of managing grief, including allowing emotional expression, understanding what the mind is doing, and supporting yourself while the adjustment takes place.
Over time, the mind learns to live with the loss while still valuing what was important. Understanding how the mind adapts helps people move forward without denying what has happened.
