Steve explains the difference between happiness in the moment and a deeper, underpinning state of mind. While immediate pleasure is valuable, long term harmony, purpose, belonging, and self image create a more stable and lasting sense of contentment.
Happiness
A State of Mind
ABOUT THIS COURSE
This course explores happiness through The Chimp Model and explains why happiness is not just a feeling in the moment, but a deeper state of mind. Professor Steve Peters distinguishes between immediate happiness and long term contentment, showing how both are influenced by how we manage our mind.
Rather than chasing happiness or constantly measuring it, Steve explains how to increase the probability of happiness by influencing the factors that support it. The course focuses on practical ways to strengthen wellbeing and create a more stable sense of contentment.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course helps you understand what happiness really means and how it can be influenced deliberately. The focus is on distinguishing between short term pleasure and long term state of mind happiness, and learning how to increase both in a practical and sustainable way.
Happiness is linked to neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and natural opioids. Steve explains how anticipation, connection, altruism, gratitude, and positive mindset can influence these systems.
Rather than rating happiness day to day, Steve recommends creating two lists: immediate happiness factors and long term happiness factors. By carrying out activities that influence happiness, you increase the probability of feeling happy without needing to measure it.
Your happiness list should include elements that satisfy both the Chimp and the Human. The Chimp may seek pleasure and reward, while the Human values harmony, gratitude, and purpose. A balanced approach prevents short term pleasure from undermining long term wellbeing.
Steve highlights common habits that reduce happiness, including comparison, people pleasing, poor coping strategies, crystal ball gazing, and trying to keep the Chimp happy at the expense of the Human.
Happiness should not be handed over to other people or external circumstances. By taking responsibility and choosing how you respond, you increase stability and protect your wellbeing.
