Steve explains why he developed the Stone of Life and why it is relevant to everybody. Both the Human and the Chimp look to the Computer for guidance, so what sits there plays a key role in how we think, feel, and act.
The Stone of Life
Your Ultimate Reference Point
ABOUT THIS COURSE
This course explains the Stone of Life and why it is relevant to everybody.
Professor Steve Peters introduces it as a key part of the Computer that both the Human and Chimp refer to for guidance when making decisions. Through his clinical work and experience, he has identified three aspects that help stabilise the mind — truths of life, perspective, and values.
The course gives an overview of these aspects, why they are important, and how they can help settle your mind and bring you back to a more stable state. Your Stone of Life is personal to you, and the focus is on understanding what may work for you.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
These short, practical sessions explain how the Stone of Life works within the mind and why it plays an important role in stabilising how you think, feel, and respond. You will be introduced to the key aspects that influence both the Human and the Chimp, and how these can be developed into a personal reference point to help manage your mind more effectively.
Before making decisions, both systems search the Computer for information and guidance. This means the quality of what sits in the Computer directly affects how we respond.
Truths of life are the beliefs that resonate with you and that you can live with. These help guide your thinking and actions, and support you in working with reality rather than against it.
Perspective helps you see the bigger picture and place situations into context. Without it, the Chimp can exaggerate and overreact, making situations feel bigger than they are.
Values are the beliefs you hold about what is right or important, along with the behaviours that demonstrate them. They influence how you choose to respond and act.
Your Stone of Life is unique to you. Steve explains the importance of keeping it active and relevant, so it can be used effectively to settle your mind and guide your responses.
