Understand how the brain develops and why different parts of the brain think in different ways. This helps explain why emotions and rational thinking can feel separate.
Introducing The Chimp Model
ABOUT THIS COURSE
This course is the starting point for understanding The Chimp Model and how your mind works. Before exploring topics like stress, confidence, or relationships, it’s important to have a clear understanding of what is happening in your mind. This course provides that foundation.
Professor Steve Peters introduces a simple way of making sense of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Across three short videos, you’ll learn the basic structure of the mind, how different parts of the brain interact, and the key rules that explain why your mind behaves the way it does.
The aim is to give you a clear framework you can use to make sense of yourself — and to support everything you go on to learn in the other courses.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course introduces the basic structure of the mind and provides a foundation for understanding how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are created. The focus is on making sense of how the mind works so you can begin to manage it more effectively.
Learn about the two decision-making systems in the mind. The Chimp reacts emotionally and quickly, while the Human thinks logically and works with facts.
Understand how beliefs, habits, and automatic responses are stored and used. The Computer can either support you or create difficulties depending on what has been programmed.
Explore why you can feel one thing but know another. This conflict between systems explains many everyday struggles with behaviour and decision-making.
Learn the basic rules that explain how the Chimp, Human, and Computer interact. These rules help you understand why your mind behaves the way it does.
Begin to recognise your own patterns and reactions and use this understanding to respond more helpfully in day-to-day situations.
