Stress Management
Recognise & Prevent it
ABOUT THIS COURSE
Stress is something that everyone experiences, but it does not affect everybody in the same way. In this course, Professor Steve Peters explains what stress is, how it differs from the normal pressures and challenges of life, and why it can become difficult to manage when left unchecked.
Using The Chimp Model, Steve explores the beliefs, expectations, and emotional reactions that often sit beneath stress. He explains how the Human, Chimp, and Computer each play a role in creating and resolving stress, and why understanding what is happening in your mind is key to managing it effectively.
The focus of this course is on recognising stress early, understanding what is driving it, and developing practical ways to prevent it from becoming an ongoing problem.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course explores what stress is, why it occurs, and how it can be managed more effectively. The focus is on recognising the causes of stress, understanding what is happening in your mind, and developing practical approaches to both managing and preventing it.
Stress can arise from many different situations, including trigger points, conflict, uncertainty, and concerns about failure. Steve explores some of the most common causes and why different people experience stress in different ways.
The course explains how each part of the mind contributes to stress. Understanding the messages from the Chimp, the role of the Computer, and the problem-solving ability of the Human provides a framework for managing stress more effectively.
Steve explains why many fears are concerns about the consequences of an outcome rather than the event itself. Learning to identify and address those consequences can help reduce stress and create a clearer plan.
The course concludes with practical approaches to stress prevention, including managing workload, setting realistic expectations, taking time out, challenging unhelpful beliefs, and developing habits that support long-term wellbeing.
