Speaking an Emotional Language

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Communication is about much more than the words we use. In this course, Professor Steve Peters explains how the Human and the Chimp communicate in different ways, and why understanding these differences can improve the way we communicate with ourselves and with other people.

Using The Chimp Model, Steve explores the difference between emotional language and factual language, and explains how the words we choose, the way we say them, and our facial expressions and body language all influence communication. He also introduces the concept of emotional facts and explains why communicating effectively involves much more than simply presenting information.

The focus of this course is on understanding the psychology behind communication and developing practical skills that can help you communicate more effectively in everyday situations.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

This course explores how the Human and the Chimp communicate in different ways and why understanding these differences can improve communication. The focus is on recognising how emotional language influences conversations and developing practical skills that can help you communicate more effectively in everyday situations.

Steve explains the difference between emotional language and factual language, and how each can influence the way communication is understood. Learning when to use each approach can help improve both personal and professional interactions.

The course explores how emotive words can influence both our own thinking and the communication of others. Steve explains why carefully choosing our vocabulary can help create more constructive conversations.

Communication involves much more than words alone. Steve explains how tone of voice, pace, volume, pauses, and emphasis all contribute to the message we communicate.

Facial expressions, posture, and body position all influence communication. The course explores why these non-verbal signals are often just as important as the words we use.

Steve introduces the concept of emotional facts and explains how they can help communicate more effectively with the emotional part of the mind. The course explores how balancing emotion with facts and logic can improve understanding and influence.

  • Useful insights

By James Richard hayton July 27, 2026

Really useful way to think about how we communicate with other people, and acknowledging, as a manager, that I don’t always choose the right language. I will think carefully how I communicate in future so that I can engage my teams’ chimp and human brains to motivate safe behaviours in the workplace. I’ll also reflect on which communications really elicit positive responses and which are less productive. Thanks

Helpful in understanding and developing this skill for my self but also understanding why there is a difference in other people too
