Self Image
Assess & Realign It
ABOUT THIS COURSE
Our self-image influences how we see ourselves, behave and interpret our experiences. But where does that image come from—and is it always based on facts?
In this course, Professor Steve Peters explores the default mode network and its role in forming our reference points for ourselves, other people and life events.
Steve explains how comments, experiences and interpretations can become stored as beliefs about who we are, even when they are based on opinions or are no longer relevant today.
Through reflection and investigation, you’ll learn how to assess the evidence behind your self-image and realign your reference points to develop a more accurate and constructive view of yourself.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course explores how your self-image is formed, the role of the default mode network and how assessing the facts can help you realign the way you see yourself.
The course explores how the Human and the Chimp interpret experiences before storing them within the Computer. Over time, comments, outcomes and other people’s opinions can become established beliefs about who you are.
Steve introduces the areas of the brain that work together as the default mode network. He explains how this network helps you reflect on yourself, interpret past experiences, consider the future and understand how you may be perceived by others.
Beliefs about yourself can sometimes originate from comments or experiences that are no longer accurate or relevant. Steve encourages you to investigate where these beliefs came from and assess whether they are supported by facts or shaped by opinions.
The Chimp can exaggerate, generalise and turn individual experiences into negative conclusions about who you are. Steve explains how moving into Human mode can help you examine the evidence, introduce perspective and reach a more balanced interpretation.
Steve shares a practical reflective exercise for assessing the reference points that influence your self-image. He explains how these can be realigned and why maintaining a more accurate and constructive self-image requires continued reflection.
